Our underfloor insulation process

At DAReco, we follow a meticulous process to ensure optimal results for your underfloor insulation. Our team begins with a comprehensive assessment of your property to determine the most suitable insulation materials and methods. We use high-performance insulation products designed to minimise heat loss and improve thermal comfort. The installation process is carried out with precision, ensuring minimal disruption to your home. Post-installation, we provide detailed advice on maintaining your insulation for long-term benefits. With our expertise, you can trust that your home will be warmer, more energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly.

Wood floor

Solid floor insulation

Retrofitting insulation to uninsulated solid floors is uncommon, as it typically requires removing the existing floor, installing insulation, and then relaying the concrete—a process that is highly disruptive and costly.

An alternative is to install a floating floor, which involves laying insulation and a new floor surface over the existing one. However, this method is rarely used unless it’s part of a full home renovation, as it often requires significant additional work—such as raising radiators, adjusting doors, relocating electrical sockets, and modifying pipework.

Suspended floor insulation

Retrofitting insulation to suspended timber floors is a relatively straightforward process—provided there is suitable access beneath the floor and enough clearance (typically around 800mm) to allow safe working conditions.

If there is no existing access hatch, we use a borescope camera to inspect the space beneath the floor through small holes, avoiding unnecessary disruption. Only if suitable space is confirmed would we then consider creating a hatch.

Once access is available, we typically install 150mm of wool insulation between the joists, held in place with netting. If the joists are deeper, thicker insulation can be used. Where joists are shallower (e.g., 100mm), we install a layer between the joists and an additional layer across the underside to prevent thermal bridging.

Ventilation is a critical part of the installation process. Proper subfloor cross-ventilation—provided by air bricks or core holes—is essential to prevent moisture buildup and timber decay. We assess existing airflow and calculate the required ventilation, generally aiming for one air brick or vent every 1.5 to 1.75 metres.

Most homes built before 2012 do not meet current subfloor ventilation standards, but this is usually easy to remedy by adding extra vents. In properties constructed from harder materials like granite or whinstone, we work with specialist contractors to carry out this work safely and effectively.

While alternative insulation materials like PIR boards can be used—especially where access is restricted—wool insulation remains the most cost-effective and widely recommended solution for suspended timber floors.
